GPs play a vital role in primary and preventative health care for PLHIV. HIV is now considered a manageable chronic condition requiring lifelong treatment. HIV treatments have changed dramatically over the years and can now offer PLHIV a long and healthy life. Electing to have your health care managed here by our accredited GP s100 HIV community prescriber means all your general medical care and HIV care can be integrated and managed by the one doctor. This leads to better health outcomes through improved coordination and continuity of your health care management needs.

Newland Street Medical Centre is an inclusive health service and we are committed to providing a comprehensive and confidential medical service.

We also provide PrEP and PEP consultations either by walk in, appointment system for face-to-face care, and appointment system with same day bookable telehealth online.

We manage Pre Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) as a HIV prevention strategy, which is an antiretroviral treatment to reduce the risk of HIV.

Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) consultations can only be provided by S100 GPs, sexual health clinics and from the Emergency Department of most public hospitals. Do not book an appointment for a PEP consultation with our S100 GP. If you think you need PEP please walk in immediately for an emergency appointment and ask for Dr Stuart Morris before 3pm weekdays, and let us know you need an EMERGENCY PEP appointment - if Dr Stuart Morris is not available, or you arrive after 3pm weekdays or on a weekend - then you will be directed to another S100 provider, Sydney Sexual Health Centre, or the nearest emergency department. You can also call the PEP hotline on tel 1800 889 887 for more information. THIS IS BECAUSE PEP MUST BE STARTED WITHIN 72 HOURS OF RISK OF EXPOSURE TO HIV FOR IT TO BE EFFECTIVE.

MORE INFORMATION ABOUT OUR SEXUAL HEALTH SERVICES

What is a s100 HIV GP community prescriber?

ART is classified as a "Section 100 (s 100)" highly specialised drug under the National Health Act, meaning that there are restrictions on prescribing these medicines in Australia.

Only GPs with advanced training and who have been accredited by the Australasian Society for HIV, Viral Hepatitis and Sexual Health Medicine (ASHM) and approved by the Department of Health are authorised to prescribe ART in New South Wales.

GP s100 HIV community prescribers maintain close links with other HIV services in Sydney and participate in regular continuing professional development activities and education.

PrEP vs PEP: What is the difference? (PrEP is not PEP)

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is the use of HIV medication to prevent HIV infection in people who are HIV-negative and are at ongoing risk of getting HIV. PrEP is recommended for people who are considered at risk of getting HIV. PrEP can be taken on a daily basis (Daily PrEP) or around the time of potential exposure as event-driven PrEP, also known as event-based PrEP (EB-PrEP) or on-demand PrEP, although this is much less effective, but better than nothing.

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) is an emergency 28 day course of HIV medication taken daily in people who are HIV-negative and have experienced a single event where they have had a known, or possible, high risk HIV exposure. This is also known as NPEP or Non-Occupational Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. To be effective at preventing HIV infection, PEP must be taken as soon as possible but definitely within 72 hours (3 days) after the episode of exposure. Whether or not you need PEP depends on how high the risk was. PEP consultations can be completed by S100 GPs including Dr Stuart Morris, a sexual health clinic, or an Emergency Department.

Access to PEP is available from local sexual health clinics during business hours and hospital emergency departments after hours and on weekends.

See https://www.getpep.info/

PEP Hotline: 1800 889 887 (Mon-Fri 9am-5pm). A/H: Recorded message with options.

PEP providing s100 GPs - walk in before 3pm weekdays. If unavailable here, please see Sydney Sexual Health Centre in Hours, or walk in to your nearest emergency department immediately - this is an emergency situation.

PEP is intended to prevent HIV infection if exposure events are not frequent or just happened one time. If you have taken multiple courses of PEP in a short time, you should think about PrEP, as it works better for people who are potentially exposed to HIV on a regular basis.
